Colony Collapse Disorder, a mass die-off of honeybees that started in 2006, is decimating honeybee colonies around the world. Scientists are still puzzled by exactly what is causing it, though bees seem to be riddled with disease of almost every kind indicating a significant issue with their immune systems. If that is true then issues like pesticide use and pollution may have powerful impacts on the wellness of bees, as is the destruction of their native environments, fields, and plants from which they collect nectar and pollen to sustain the hive.
Regardless of the reason, resources are vitally needed to continue to study the issue and try to find a solution. Every year since 2007, nearly a third of commercial honeybee hives have collapsed. On top of that, about one of every three bites we take is possible because of honeybee pollination, including a large number of our everyday fruits and vegetables plus almonds, cotton, and more. If honeybees continue to die-off, we may lose access to many of the wonderful foods we take for granted.
